Re-edit of narrative film: Youth of Today

I decided to do a re-edit of my narrative film where I cut some of the scenes down slightly so your not watching the same thing for a long time and I decided to cut a bit at the end of one of the scenes because I wanted it to be continuous and make it look like one shot rather than two and so it looked smooth and easy to watch.

I’m unsure whether I need to add music to it or not, because i’m not sure if it will make sense and whether there would be a reason for me to add music to it and at the moment there isn’t any reason for me to add music to it.

Final Draft of Youth of Today Narrative Film

This one is slightly different to the first one as I’ve added a title sequence and an ending with some facts about the symptoms of video game addiction, I felt that I had to add these facts because I believe they are quite important facts to know and there are a lot of people who are addicted to video games, and you don’t realise as you are the one who lets them stay on it for so long.

Some other facts, teens are spending more than one third of their day using media such as online video or music and for ages between 8 and 12 is nearly 6 hours per day. According to Nielsen the average U.S. gamer aged 13 or over spent 6.3 hours a week playing video games during 2013. Children aged 2-11 watch over 24 hours of tv per week, whilst adults aged 35-49 watch more than 33 hours of tv per week, according to the data from Nielsen he suggests that TV time increases the older you get.

They have also found out that if your child exceeds that rather strict hour per day threshold, the study found the positive effects suddenly vanish. There’s no noticeable effect, positive or negative, for kids who play one to three hours of video games compared to kids who play none.

A couple of quotes from famous tech developers and company owners, Patience is a key element of success (BIll Gates), everyone here has the sense that right now is one of those moments when we are influencing the future (Steve Jobs), video games are bad for you? that’s what they said about rock and roll (Shigeru Miyamoto).

Youth Of Today Narrative Film

I’ve had to make a different narrative film as I wasn’t happy with the one I made before the one i made the most recently, as there was no continuity compared to the latest one as it was just one scene in one room without a lot of dialogue, so it didn’t really make a lot of sense how the person got there, and it didn’t work the way I wanted it to, so I changed my idea completely.

This next idea is about a teenagers addiction to video games or just screen time, as parents always have a go at their kids for being on it too long or they’ve been watching tv for too long etc. So I wanted to depict a young teenage lad playing on an xbox for a while without doing anything it’s the first thing he does when he comes home from school all he thinks of and all he wants to do day in day out.

So the film basically shows that the boy has been playing for hours and then his parents come in, have a go at him for not doing anything, and then time goes by, he’s then asked to do revision but he answers after this game etc, he then is basically forced to turn it off and walks off to go and do revision.

The Game Narrative Film

Well this film was based on the main idea I was going to do but when it came to the editing stages of the film it just didn’t work out how I wanted it to, so I decided to leave it where it was and just restart all over again with a different film all together with a different idea.

As I wasn’t happy with the outcome that was the main reason I decided to change it and make a completely different film, as the shots I imagined didn’t turn out the way i expected them too as the game wasn’t played correctly and there wasn’t much dialogue throughout the film even though I wanted there to be quite a bit of dialogue, as it would have made the film more interesting and more narrative.

it was quite hard to cut as well and it was all really one scene there wasn’t any continuity there at all and no one really moved so I don’t think it worked too well really. There wasn’t a lot of dialogue throughout the film as we had to change the script because i didn’t have enough people to film with so we couldn’t use the script that i had previously written.

Location for Narrative Film

I have found the perfect location for my film, as it makes it look really authentic, even though there is a skylight when I wanted it to be dark/gloomy, but it might add effect and I could also change the white balance on my camera to make it look darker and also through the editing stage, to make it look really authentic.

Hopefully I will be able to use this location, as the room is also the perfect size and it looks like you could put an underground betting ring in there, so I think this location would really add to the film in a massive way, and i’ll be really glad if i can use this location.

Within this location I will also be able to get a lot of various different angles as well so it will be very different from how I was going to film it, i will also bew able to be a lot closer to the table with the microphone as well so i will be able to get it all synced together as well hopefully pretty well.

Backup narrative film idea

My second idea is where, there is a group of friends, who start playing together in a forest, just joking about playing man hunt,  but one member of the group decides to take it very seriously and brings a knife with him. The game starts and the players all run away in different directions,  and the chaser begins to count, and all the players run deep into the forest, so he decides to run one direction which he saw one of them running, so he decides to make chase.

He then gets closer and closer as he can hear one of them, so he edges closer and closer, until he gets right behind them and all you see is him drop her from behind as he’s killed her, so he then starts to run in another direction desperately looking for the other players, he then begins to scream as he can’t find them, shouting ‘come out, come out wherever you are’, he then hears the rustle of leaves as one of them moves so he sprints towards that sound and he then finds one, and the player begins to panic as she can hear him breathing heavily and his heavy footsteps and then you hear the incision of the knife.

Then he finally finds the third player hiding very well and he jumps them very quietly and kills them brutally with the knife in a way that you wouldn’t really expect them to and he leaves them all there to die slowly by bleeding out as he runs off victorious to hide and act like he was never there.

Draft script for narrative film

The first scene starts with the main character (Ken), playing blackjack on his phone, then he begins to get excited as he starts to win, so he then believes he can play for a lot of money but in person, rather than through a screen.

Ken: ‘I should do this for real money’

He then decides to go to an underground betting ring

Where there are two other players already sat around the table playing as he joins in

Dealer: Evening Sir, care to join?

Ken: Oh yes of course

Player 1 (Chanelle): You realise it’s for real money now bigshot

Player 2: Come on Join, We’re waiting here!

Ken: Ok, Ok

Ken then joins the table and the dealer begins

Dealer: Place your bets, the more you put down, the more could be won

Ken hesitates, he then only puts a small amount down

Player 1 (Chanelle): Not so big now are we bigshot

Player 2: Leave him alone

Dealer: No More Bets!

Ken then starts to panic, thinking what if I get a rubbish hand etc, or could I win massive

The dealer then places the cards down

Dealer: This is all a game of chance and thats it!

Ken suddenly his heart drops as he sees his first card is a face value

The dealer then puts down the second card and the tension in the room is very high as he slowly puts it down

Player 1 (Chanelle): Well hurry up I want to see if i’ve won or not

Player 2: Calm down, there’s no panic

Dealer places the cards down and the other two players ask for a third card and bust and Ken is hesitant to ask for a third card so he doesn’t and sticks hoping he beats the dealer

The other two players only play a couple more rounds until they both run out of money leaving Ken left alone with the dealer

He then keeps playing and drinking at the same time, not realising that he’s slowly building up a debt with the dealer he is then taken out as he begins to argue with the dealer

He then wakes up the next day checks his account and its completely empty, so he starts to really worry about how he’s going to pay off his debt with the dealer/debt collector

He starts to panic and then starts begging people for money to help him pay off this debt

Ken starts ringing around, ‘Please anyone, i need some help with a money problem I have’

Then Ken begins to realise he has no way of paying off the debt, so he starts to scream in anger and sadness at the same time

He then hears a sudden knock on his door, just ‘bang, bang, bang’, he doesn’t want to answer as he can see the silhouette in the door

He then opens the door, unwillingly, sees who it is and then proceeds to slam it shut, but then the debt collector then realises he didn’t lock it and just barges through and slams the door behind him, as Ken then fears what happens and the scene ends there.

Plan for Narrative Film

The first scene of the film is the reason he decides to go and play blackjack in an underground betting ring, as he plays online, he then starts to think he is getting better and then decides to play in person thinking he’s one of the best players, so believes he can beat anyone he then plays and then loses all of his money to the dealer/debt collector.

The second scene of the film is the game of blackjack, where I will hopefully be able to film in the local pub on the pool table with the low lights as they will give a dramatic effect on the game with a lot of different camera angles on all the players, and then having more focus on the main character whilst he is playing blackjack.

Throughout this scene, I will also focus on the dealer as he is a double bluff and he is also the debt collector in the film, as the main character just keeps playing until the other players leave, and he is then left alone around the table with the dealer still playing hardly any chips left but he then decides to keep going and digging himself a hole and getting deeper and deeper into debt.

The scene after it shows him leaving the underground betting ring, with the dealer just focussing on him so the camera shot will be from behind the dealer watching the main character leaving and adding more suspense to the scene.

He then wakes up and checks his phone and wallet, which is empty, and realises he is in a mountain of debt after getting drunk and playing blackjack the night before, he just kept going until he was escorted out of the underground betting ring, without realising, he then desperately asks friends, family anyone for money to help him clear this debt, he then starts cowering as he finds absolutely no help to help him clear his debt with the dealer.

The next scene he then realises that he can’t do anything as he has no money to do anything so he just starts to panic cry and sits in a corner crying into his knees and he is sat in front of the front door waiting for anyone who is willing to help but then, a shadow comes to the door he has a sigh of relief and then, a loud knock on the door, he gets up and answers without realising who it is at first, the debt collector then grabs him and slams the door behind him and the scene shuts on the debt collector pushing him further into the house and then the door closing behind him and the scene will finish from behind the debt collectors back for dramatic effect.

Narrative Film Idea: The Game

The idea I have now come up with for my final film, I have decided to make a blackjack game, where the main character then bets all of his money and loses, he then is in debt with a man he owes a lot of money too.

The opening scene will be the game of blackjack, the game begins to heat up so the players start betting more than they can afford, he then leaves drunk not realising what he has got himself into, the next day he then checks his bank account and he is in debt and starts to panic going around asking people for money to pay off this debt desperately.

He tries to think desperately of ways to get out of it, but just starts to cry and scream as he can’t and then the debt collector knocks at his door, he daren’t answer as he knows exactly who it is. But the twist on my story is at first he didn’t actually know who the debt collector was as he was playing blackjack, he didn’t think anything of it, but then when the debt collector actually comes he finds out it was the dealer at the casino and that the dealer had actually double-crossed him.

There will be about 4 or 5 characters involved, the dealer/debt collector, the guy who gets in debt, and two extra players to add to the blackjack scene, the game of blackjack then happens to be a last man standing sort of ordeal, where the guy who gets in debt is the last man, he then bets all of the money he has and thinks he has a chance of winning and then loses it all unexpectedly.

Maybe make it into chapters:

Chapter 1: The reason

Chapter 2: The game

Chapter 3: The aftermath

Chapter 4: The collector
