Banksy is one of the top British graffiti artists, with his work being preserved all over the world, and selling for millions at auction, but he believes that his work should be left where he has done it compared to being taken down to then be sold at auction. He has also recently been in the news for controversial reasons based on his work such as the girl with the balloon being shredded after it had been sold and then the piece he did in South Wales on a random persons garage wall.
He first came into the lime light of the graffiti world in the early 1990s, where he first started drawing chimps on the side of trains he then moved on to rats, slightly copying the french artist blek le rat, who’s trademark it was with the rats, Banksy first started doing graffiti free hand but then later moved onto using stencils to do his art work and people then knew it was Banksy who had done it.
He also accidentally started a graffiti war with another british graffiti artist called Robbo, as Banksy had sprayed over one of Robbo’s original pieces as he didn’t realise it was an original as it had been sprayed over numerous amounts of time before. So by doing this Banksy started a war with him and wherever either of them would do a piece a part of “team Robbo or team Banksy” would spray there tags over the top of it as a mark on the war.
This war went on for a few years before Robbo had an accidental fall and was then placed in a coma, Banksy then made a tribute to Robbo whilst he was in a coma, as a way to try and end the feud and also send out a candle to Robbo whilst he was in an induced coma, Robbo later died in 2014 leaving a son and two daughters behind, he was around before Banksy was and he was an inspiration to young artists around the country.
His injury was also 5 days prior to his exhibition, at the signal gallery “Team Robbo – the sell out tour”, a few of his pieces were sold and the feud between Banksy and King Robbo then ended and the piece was restored that Banksy had painted over the top of with a spray can with a flame and a crown added to the black and white piece which was a really nice touch by Banksy.
