My Own Semiotics

This is my objective signifier as it can be seen as one thing and one slogan that britain are not scared of terrorists and it is a sign that we love others but we are not afraid of terrorists.

This is one of my subjective signifiers, with it being a football team people have a lot of different opinions when it comes to sport with who they support and who they want to win etc. I thought that this was quite a good one as people project their own opinions towards any team or sport and who they want to win.

This is also another subjective signifier because when it comes to being a photographer everyone has their own opinions about what the best lens is etc, so this is a photo of a 50mm prime lens that is mostly good for portrait photography or other things but other photographers might not want to use a prime lens and they’ll use a wide angle lens instead and so on.

Title Sequence 2

I re-edited my title sequnce as I thought the first one was too long and the title’s didn’t last very long and i have also added music to this one to make it look better and more effective compared to the first one and it adds more to it and i think it makes it slightly more eerie to watch all together.

Research for Title Sequence

Throughout the mass amount of different title sequences, there are some that just catch your eye, and make you want to watch the whole thing rather than skipping it and it develops throughout each season in some series such as game of thrones and the walking dead, they have changed by adding subtle things to the sequences such as more locations and in the walking dead sequence everything is decaying more and more as the years go on.

This is one of my favourites because every season they always add something extra, it may only be a small extra but you do recognise it as you always just want to watch it.

As the seasons have gone on through game of thrones, they have added all the new locations to the title sequence and it’s a very clever animation for the title sequence and it’s very effective and enjoyable to watch.

One of the best movie title sequences recently has been Guardians of the Galaxy 2 where all the characters are fighting off this huge monster and all you see is baby Groot dancing next to the speakers whilst everyone else is working hard trying to kill this monster.

Another good title sequence is Scott Pilgrim vs the world, where it’s him playing guitar with his band and they use a lot of visual effects around him to make it look really cool and effective, and even though he is an awkward character the title sequence makes him look really cool.

Signifiers Research

In semiotics, a sign is anything that communicates a meaning that is not the sign itself to the interpreter of the sign. The meaning can be intentional such as a word uttered with a specific meaning, or unintentional, such as a symptom is a sign of a particular medical condition. Signs can communicate through any of the senses, visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, or taste.

Two major theories describe the way signs acquire the ability to transfer information. Both theories understand the defining property of the sign as a relation between a number of elements. In the tradition of semiotics developed by Ferdinand de Saussure (referred to as semiology) the sign relation is dyadic, consisting only of a form of the sign (the signifier) and its meaning (the signified). Saussure saw this relation as being essentially arbitrary, motivated only by social convention. Saussure’s theory has been particularly influential in the study of linguistic signs. The other major semiotic theory, developed by C. S. Peirce, defines the sign as a triadic relation as “something that stands for something, to someone in some capacity”[1] This means that a sign is a relation between the sign vehicle (the specific physical form of the sign), a sign object (the aspect of the world that the sign carries meaning about) and an interpretant (the meaning of the sign as understood by an interpreter). According to Peirce signs can be divided by the type of relation that holds the sign relation together as either icons, indices or symbols. Icons are those signs that signify by means of similarity between sign vehicle and sign object (e.g. a portrait, or a map), indices are those that signify by means of a direct relation of contiguity or causality between sign vehicle and sign object (e.g. a symptom), and symbols are those that signify a law or arbitrary social convention.

This sign is quite a significant one as all kids want McDonald’s and that’s it and this slogan is a very iconic slogan and everyone knows it even if you don’t eat at McDonald’s you still know the slogan as its very well known.

Foley Film Research

For this segment, I am going to be talking about how much foley art is actually used during films and what you actually don’t realise, the amount that certain sounds in the film are actually made by foley artists is incredible and you don’t actually realise much that some sounds are completely re-made rather than filmed on set.

This video is of Hugh Jackman re-creating his sound effects of him fighting in Logan, so most of the fighting scenes were filmed on set but then this scene, in particular, he had to re-make all his sounds during this fighting scene using the art of foley.

This film is of two foley artists showing you how the majority of sounds that are created during the art of making foley sound for a variety of different films.

Fatboy Slim – Weapon of choice music video review

The lighting throughout the video is high key and they use a mass amount of different camera angles throughout the video to keep it interesting, as the video is just Christopher Walken dancing around in a hotel for the video but that’s what this song makes you want to do, the imagery makes it fun and just makes you want to join him and dance as well. The characterization throughout the video is very simple as Christopher Walken isn’t young so it makes the video a lot more fun when you see a man of an older generation dancing like a young man.

The tone of the music video is to keep it fun and to make people want to listen to it repeatedly as it is a very fun song to listen to and the whole depiction is for the video to be humorous and funny and make you want to jump up and move to the rhythm.

Fatboy Slim – Weapon of choice song review

The style of music was very arty and fun compared to the Bjork song and the contrast between the two videos is huge, and the lyrics throughout the song gives you options to think and it’s quite open to what you want to think about. The themes throughout the song are quite arty and also psychedelic and make you want to get up and dance. The imagery throughout the song you would just think of someone dancing stupidly somewhere as it works very well with the music.

The rhythm of the whole song just makes you feel good and makes you want to just get up and dance yourself and it makes you want to keep listening to the song over and over again and there is a lot of repetition throughout the song but I think its needed for this song as it keeps it fun and it’s very easy to listen to.

Bjork all is full of love song review

After watching the video we were told to just listen to the song and then see if our thoughts and opinions had changed at all after watching it. The style of music I thought was quite psychedelic but also a sort of love song, the lyrics throughout the song are giving advice/ guidance or direction to what people want love to be. The main theme throughout the video was about love and depiction of love.

The imagery throughout the music video was very strong as I thought it was a depiction of life and expectation to what people want in life and from life and the rhythm of the music was very psychedelic which makes you think without you even realising and there is a lot of repetition throughout the video, where one of the main lyrics was ‘all this thing of love’.

Bjork All is full of love video review

The Lighting throughout the video went from low key to high key lighting, the camera angles made the video very interesting as they used a lot of mid to low camera angles and the imagery throughout the whole thing made the person look very robotic. I believe that the depiction throughout the video depicted people as robots as its like we’re programmed to do the same thing every day, which makes the video quite in your face.

The video was quite psychedelic as well as there were two female robots making love in the video which could be quite a controversial subject, the tone of the video you could class it as quite dark and the camera angles also showed a story I believe and it slightly inticed you in the music video.

Foley Scene

The scene is where Rocky runs up the iconic stairs in Philadelphia for one of the most iconic scenes in the series of films ever.
